Consider Landscape and Location

When choosing your metal roof’s color, it is important to take into consideration not only your home’s architectural style, but also where your house is located and how you want it to appear in your landscape. If you would like your home to stand out from your landscape, pick a color that will be in sharp contrast to the colors of the landscape that surrounds your house. For dark color settings, pick light metal roofing colors, and vice-versa, for light color backgrounds, pick a dark metal roofing color. On the other hand, if you would like your house to blend in with the surroundings, the best way to achieve this effect is to pick a metal roofing color that matches the most prevalent color in your immediate surroundings.

General Color Palette Guide

Standing Seam Metal Roof Wayland MA 2

Gray color is one of the most common and popular in metal roofing, and typically there is a range of light to dark shades to choose from. Gray is a classic color, and a nice option if you would like to simulate the look of slate or shingles and it also closely matches the natural color of metal itself. A gray metal roof would complement white, black, green and blue house exteriors extremely well, but truly neutral shades can complement other exterior colors as well. Another benefit of gray color is that its neutral, neither absorbing or reflecting too much sunlight. Consequently, a gray metal roof will not raise or lower the temperature of your home, keeping your energy costs in check.

Another classic color option for a metal roof is black. This versatile color can be paired with virtually any house exterior color. This may be a particularly savvy choice, if you like to periodically repaint your home’s exterior, because you will not need to worry that the new house paint will clash with your roof. A black metal roof is also a beautiful fit for a house with brick exterior. One disadvantage of black color is that it absorbs more sunlight than any other color, thereby raising the temperature inside your home, so it is not the most energy-efficient option.

A neutral tone of a tan/brown roof provides the benef of being a good match for a wide range of house accent colors. A tan metal roof will look great paired with a a brown, yellow, cream or white exterior house color. Don’t think that tan/brown tones are bland and boring, as there is plenty of unique shades to choose from, such as light tan, deep chocolate brown, lighter brown with gray undertones or a metallic bronze shade. Some variation of brown color may also be an aesthetically pleasing choice, if your house has a brick exterior with brown or yellow undertones. As with gray color, most shades of tan roofing are neutral, neither absorbing or reflecting too much sunlight.

While blue is not a classic metal roofing color and is not a common choice, it is an excellent option if you are looking to create a bold look. There are various shades of blue to consider, ranging from bright to soft and muted. Typically, a blue metal roof looks best with white, gray or blue-toned homes.

If you are looking for a unique metal roofing color that is not over the top, consider green. Being an organic and natural color, green works well in a wide range of surroundings, and can be paired with white, gray and shades of blue siding. Shades of green metal roofs range from mutes tones to more brighter and bolder options.

White Standing Seam Metal Roof

White is also a rare and unique color for metal roofing, especially pure, bright white, because dirt is more visible on these roofs. If you like white color, its better to follow in the footsteps of like minded homeowners and choose an off-white shade, such as bone-white or ivory, which do a much better job concealing dirt. White roofs can be paired with virtually any color siding and look particularly attractive together with warm brick tones, making the house really stand out. Another great benefit of white, which appeals to environmentally-conscious homeowners, is that it reflects more light than any other color, which means that it can lower temperatures inside your home, and reduce your utility bill.

Red is another bold and daring color option for your metal roof, that can really transform the look and feel of your home. You can choose from a primary red color or go for more subtle and richer shades such as burgundy, an orange-based red, or terra-cotta. The latter shade may work particularly well with a brick home, creating a seamless monochromatic design. If you are looking for a contrasting, sharp look, consider pairing a red metal roof with a white or grey home exterior.

Metallic Colors

Another color option that many homeowners are developing a taste for is the look of bare metal. Its appealing for anybody who wants to achieve an ultra modern look, and works really well with contemporary architectural styles. Steel, aluminum, copper and zinc each have a natural distinctive color that sets them apart. Any metallic color you choose will create a beautiful and unique look for your home.

Do you have a very soft yellow want to use that above a first floor porch at our beach house

      Hi Lori,

In theory, you can get any color you want. However, I’ve never seen yellow.

If I understand correctly, very soft yellow would be almost beige – right?

If so, then yes, you can get it no problem.

We will have a sage green siding and are trying to choose a metal roof color. We are thinking along a light grey or an off white have you seen any houses done this way? Would it be a good combination?

    • admin says:

I think sage green will work great with Light Grey color such as Slate Grey, which is standard among all standing seam manufacturers and most metal shingles brands. Off white would be TOO bright to look at.

BTW – I missed part of your comment where you mention grey, so yea – we are both thinking the same thing.

Other colors would look weird … maybe black .. but it attracts too much heat, and is too strong of a color for sage green. If you had a darker green, black would look ok … but in your case, definitely Slate Grey
